 It’s been estimated that there were about 77.8 million Americans born during the post-World War II baby boom. That’s been a significant part of our population, one that has a big influence on our culture. The baby boom was also decades ago, and whether we want to admit it or not, the baby boomers are approaching old age. The youngest boomers are in their 50s, and those who were born immediately after the War are approaching their 70s.

If you are a baby boomer, chances are you’ve had to deal with at least some of these health issues, but there are still things you can do to take care of yourself. Here are three things you can do now to ensure that you stay healthy well into your golden years.

1. Stay Active

One of the main reasons the health of so many elderly people goes into decline is because they don’t stay active. They often don’t have as much energy, they aren’t as flexible and they are generally more prone to injury. That doesn’t mean that you cannot be active in your old age. Engage in low-impact exercises or even start playing sports. Swimming, golfing or even just going for walks are all easy ways to stay active and in shape.

2. Eat Well

The traditional American diet has never been all that healthy. For the baby boomer generation, meals consisted of a lot of high calorie, high protein foods with a lot of meat and fat. As time has passed, we’ve added more processed foods to our diet, which has negatively affected our health. If you’re a baby boomer, chances are that this way of eating has caught up to you, and it could cause some serious health problems that will only be compounded by your age. It’s time to start eating healthier. Eat smaller portions, cut out some of the meat and bread and add more fruits and vegetables to your diet.

3. Make Annual Appointments with your Doctor

Many baby boomers have the bad habit of only seeing a doctor when they suspect something is wrong with them. While scheduling an appointment to address a possible health problem isn’t a bad idea, annual check-ups are far more effective in keeping you healthy. Healthcare should focus on maintenance and catching problems while they’re still manageable, not about fixing damage that may have already been done.
